An introduction into the world of glass shower doors. Everything from sliding glass door to frameless glass. There is a lot of detail that can go into what some people would be a simple thing.

If you are looking to upgrade your bathroom with stylish, reliable, and high-quality shower doors, you have come to the right place. Here at EZ Bath. we have many years of experience when it comes to bathroom remodels, and we have helped many homeowners and landlords to create the perfect bathroom for their needs! In this guide, we will reveal everything you need to know about the shower doors we have available, and how to choose the best one for you.

How to choose the perfect shower door for you

There are a number of different factors to consider when it comes to choosing the perfect shower door. This includes the following:

Get the measurements right

There is only one place to begin, and this is by getting the measurements right for your shower door. This is imperative when selecting the right shower door for your enclosure. If you get this wrong, you are going to end up experiencing problems as soon as you have purchased it. The last thing you want is to receive your shower door and then realize that it does not fit.

Rather than simply guessing what door is going to be right, grab yourself a measuring tape, as this will ensure your measurements are 100 percent accurate. Make sure you get the height, depth, and width, which should preferably be in millimeters.

Should you have an old shower door that you are simply going to replace, take the measurements of your current shower tray to find out what is needed.

The budget you have available

If you are shopping for something new, it can be very easy to find yourself getting carried away and looking for products that you simply are not able to afford. To prevent yourself from getting depressed in this manner, determine how much you can afford comfortably and stick with this budget. Having a clear budget will save you a considerable amount of time and prevent any procrastination in the future.

Where is the shower enclosure located?

Where your shower enclosure is based can also have an impact on the sort of shower door you can have. Corner showers, for example, may not have as much space for a shower door as shower in the middle of the wall does. Consider where your shower currently is or is going to be placed and select a door that is most suitable for this location. This is something we can help you with.

The space available to you

A lot of people can be tempted to go big when purchasing a new door for their shower enclosure, yet this is only going to result in problems during the installation process. Once the measurements have been taken, make sure you stick with them and select a shower door that has been designed to fit into the designated space. Again, this is something we can make sure of.

Some of the most common sizes for shower enclosures include 900 x 900 mm and 800 x 800 mm. However, there are some bespoke sizes as well, so it is imperative to take out the measuring tape.

No matter what you do, make sure you do not select a shower door that is too deep, tall, or wide. If you have a small bathroom, the last thing you want is a shower that dominates the entire space, as there will not be much room for you to move around comfortably and it won’t look very feng shui.

On the flip side, if you have a big bathroom, you can go for something larger. It is all about scall. After all, if you have a large bathroom yet a tiny shower enclosure, you can feel somewhat claustrophobic while you are taking a shower.

Choosing a beautiful design

Next, you need to consider the design that is right for your bathroom. There are plenty of different styles to select from, and it can be difficult to choose only one.

Your current decor and the size of your bathroom will also play a massive role. Think about the look that you want to create and the sort of feel you want to have in your bathroom.

If you want to create a greater sense of privacy, you cannot go wrong with frosted glass. Plus, this will add a beautiful and decorative feel to your bathroom.

If you want to create a sophisticated and clean look, transparent glass is the perfect solution. This can add real elegance and glamor to your bathroom. You may want to spend some time looking on the likes of Pinterest and Instagram so that you can get some inspiration for the sort of bathroom that you want to creat.

What sort of finish should you go for?

The shower door you select is typically going to depend on your own personal taste and the decor in your bathroom. However, there are a few other things to think about as well. So, let’s take a look at some of the main options to consider:

  • Patterned doors - Patterned doors come in many different styles, with patterns such as raindrops or rainfall being popular choices. These sort of patterns do provide privacy yet they are more translucent when compared with frosted finishes.
  • Frosted glass doors - Frosted glass doors provide greater privacy and have an opaque finish. They can also help to make your shower the statement point in your bathroom. Nevertheless, maintenance can be a little bit more difficult, as frosted glass can be harder to keep clean. This is because the pattern tends to hide dirt and grime more than transparent glass does.
  • Clear glass doors - Clear glass bathroom doors have long been popular, and they always will be. Clear glass doors are stylish, modern, and versatile, as they suit most bathrooms. As they have a high level of visibility, they are ideal if you have intricately tiled or elaborate tiled shower walls that you want to show off. They can also create the illusion of more space, making a smaller bathroom look bigger.

Understanding the different kinds of shower doors that are available

There are many different types of shower doors available today, so let’s take a look at some of the different types so you can get a better understanding:

Hinged shower doors

There is only one place to begin, and this is with hinged shower doors. Out of all of the different shower door styles that are available, hinged shower doors are probably the most simplistic. They open and shut on a hinged side, yet they can be used with either straight or curved shower enclosures.

A hinged shower door will provide a secure enclosure, which will make certain that your bathroom does not end up sustaining water or steam damage. These shower doors have a timeless and classic design, which is available in a wide range of styles, so you should have no trouble finding a shower door that matches the decor in your bathroom.

Hinged shower doors are better suited to bigger bathrooms, as the door will open out into the room, which means you are going to need greater space surrounding the shower enclosure. Hinged doors are also perfect for square or rectangle shower enclosures.

  • These doors work just like any other door, opening and closing in the manner you are used to
  • There are beautiful frameless designs available

  • These shower doors can be expensive due to premium fittings and thicker glass, however, we will always work within your budget and discuss the different options available to you
  • An open door will take up more bathroom space when compared with other designs

Inswinging shower door

Out of all of the shower doors that are available, this is the most rare and unique design of them all. The infold door incorporates a special arm mechanism, which will open the door up into the showering space. Once you are in the shower, it pretty much wraps back around you. Some of the these doors will straddle halfway in and halfway out, whereas others go completely into the shower space.

The stunning sweeping motion looks incredible, yet as you can imagine, the mechanics associated with this do make it one of the more expensive options on the market today. For example, in comparison to pivot doors, you can expect to pay between two and three times the price. Of course, we will be more than happy to discuss your budget with you and give you an understanding of what is achievable within this. We always work to our clients’ budgets so that they end up with a beautiful and functional bathroom they adore.

  • A smooth and beautiful opening action
  • Sizes tend to be between 700 mm and 1,000 mm
  • Ideal for saving space in your bathroom

  • Intricate mechanisms are needed, which can result in these doors being more expensive

Bi-folding shower doors

Another option to consider is a bi-folding shower door. While these are not going to be highly functional, they are incredibly elegant and stylish. You can choose from having either three or two folds in your bi-folding shower doors, which will save you huge amounts of space while being much more stylish when compared with a conventional door.

Bi-folding shower doors look incredible in contemporary bathrooms. You can turn a standard shower cubicle into a statement piece. If you instantly want to add some style and chicness to your bathroom, bi-folding doors are the perfect choice.

  • You can save plenty of bathroom space with this inward-opening design

  • The glass can be thin, yet you do not have to worry about this when you choose us!

Sliding shower doors

Another option to consider is a sliding shower door. Sliding shower doors work incredibly well when you want to save space in a small bathroom, as they create a compact and slim shower enclosure. You can also get sliding doors that work with curved shower cubicles. Therefore, it does not matter what shape of shower enclosure you have, sliding shower doors can work well.

Sliding doors are also an excellent choice for small bathrooms because they do not require any extra toom. They do not open outwards, meaning you do not have to fret about losing any space.

If there is a guest bathroom in your home, a sliding door is ideal because these bathrooms are typically smaller when compared with master bathrooms.

  • Most designs can be flipped for RH or LH access
  • You can add a side panel to create a corner showering space
  • The door does not open out, meaning it will not take up any floor space in your bathroom
  • Ideal for creating bigger shower spaces

  • If you do not opt for a quality company, the rollers can end up failing, which means they may need to be replaced
  • Sizes tend to only start at 1000 mm wide, however, with our bespoke service, we can cater to anything you need

Pivot shower doors

Last but not least, pivot doors simply open and shut, making them another type of simplistic yet stylish shower door. Shower doors can be designed to either open outward or inward, depending on the space you have available and your own personal preference.

Pivot doors will open super wide and they can lie flat against the wall of the shower enclosure. Because of this, make sure that you do not store anything on the side that could prevent the door from opening in full.

Because of how wide pivot doors open, pivoting doors are perfect if you have a sizable bathroom. If your bathroom is quite small, we would not recommend pivot doors, as they can make a small room feel cramped.

Although we do not recommend having carpets in your bathroom, a pivot door certainly will not work well with carpets or rugs, as it will cause them to become soaked whenever you open the door. Instead, pivot doors are much better in bathrooms with non-slip floors or wet room bathrooms.

  • Ideal for small spaces, with some designs adjusting down to 650 mm
  • Simple design and nothing much can go wrong
  • More affordable than some of the other options

  • 75 percent of the door will open up into the bathroom space

Points to consider when choosing glass for your shower door

The quality of the glass is imperative when it comes to your shower door. Not only do you want a shower door that looks incredible but it needs to boost high levels of quality too so that it can last for years and years to come.

Here are some important points to consider when looking for the best glass for your shower door:

  • Edge protection is important. If your glass does not have protective framing, it can be broken or chipped with greater ease, especially in family bathrooms that are busy. A shower enclosure that has strong and robust aluminium framing will provide support for the glass, ensuring it is well protected.
  • It is advisable to choose glass with an easy clean coating, as this will help in lowering the build-up of limescale, grime, and soap.
  • Depending on the shape, the more curved the shower enclosure is, or the bigger the glass is, the less thickness that can be achieved because of the design.
  • More support is going to be required when the glass is thicker because of the extra weight.
  • For a shower enclosure or a wet room, toughened safety glass is always a worthy choice.
  • 8 mm or 10 mm tempered glass is long-lasting, safe, highly durable, and very easy to clean, which is why this is a popular choice.

As you can see, there is a lot that needs to be considered when it comes to choosing glass ofr oyur shower door, and this is why it is important to work with an expert team who can help you to create a stunning and highly functional bathroom that will last for years and years to come.

Why frameless shower doors have become so popular

Out of all of the different shower door designs that are available today, there is no denying that framless shower doors have become incredibly popular. There are a number of different reasons why this is the case. So, let’s take a look at the five main benefits of frameless shower doors in further detail:

  1. Framless shower doors enable the flow of light - The bathroom is one of those areas where light flow is incredibly important when it comes to carrying out your daily routine. If you are in a dark shower, it can make it challenging to find soap, shampoo, razors, and such like. You will find yourself relying a lot on your overhead lighting, which costs more money. However, a frameless glass shower door enables both natural and your artificial lighting to flow into the space with ease, helping to boost visibility considerably.
  2. You can choose from a wide range of sizes - Another benefit associated with frameless shower doors is that they give you complete flexibility in terms of design. You should have no trouble finding the frameless shower doors you need for the type and size of shower you have. No matter weather you ended shower doors for a small corner walk-in or you have an expansive spa shower, a frameless glass shower door can be created to suit any sort of scenario. All you need to do is give our experienced and friendly team a call to discuss your requirements.
  3. Less chance of mold building up if you have a frameless shower door - As there are no seals around a frameless glass door, there is going to be less chance of mold building up. This is because there is no place for soap and water to gather. This makes it  alot easier to clean and maintain your bathroom.
  4. Frameless doors can make your bathroom feel bigger - Earlier, we mentioned how frameless showers can help natural light to flow around your bathroom freely. This is beneficial for a number of different reasons. Not only does it brighten up the space but it can also make your bathroom appear bigger than it actually is. Sliding shower doors and shower curtains can cut your sight lines off, whereas glass will enable your eyes to see into the shower space, which can make it feel like the bathroom is a lot bigger than it actually is. This is why framless glass doors are definitely the way to go if you have a smaller bathroom.
  5. Frameless shower doors are a lot easier to clean - Most people would agree that the bathroom is not their favorite place to clean in the home. Bathtubs and showers can present a particularly difficult task. However, with a frameless glass shower door, it is a lot easier to simply apply your cleaning solution and squeegee the door.

The best option is a shower guard, which comes with a lifetime warranty. If this is not within your budget, there is a free upgrade option, which has an applied coating that comes with a ten-year warranty for your peace of mind.
  • Perfectly tempered glass - One thing that a lot of people do not know is that glass should never have 90-degree angles in them. If you cut a hard 90 on glass and it taps anything in that inside corner, it will shatter. This is why it really does matter where you get your shower glass from, as the last thing you want is smashed glass all over your bathroom.

What side should your shower door open on?

It is important to realize that there is no right or wrong when determining what side your shower door should open on. In fact, the vast majority of shower doors on the market these days are reversible. This means that they can be installed using a door hinge on either the right or the left. To achieve this with the majority of designs today, you are simply going to need to rotate the full door by 180 degrees, i.e. you should flip it upside down.

A fixed panel is incorporated into a sliding shower door. Your fitter is going to install this either on the right-hand or left-hand side, which will depend on your preference for entering the shower. You may have to select a model with handing incorporated, i.e. left-hand or right-hand entry, if the glass incorporates any sort of oversized rollers or cut-outs.

The which way you install is up to your preference and what is practical based on the space that is available to you.
